Ferrahs Abdelbaset’s, DC (’08) introduction to chiropractic traces back to the early 2000s after getting the opportunity to shadow a graduate from Logan University’s Doctor of Chiropractic (DC) program. It was during this experience he discovered his passion for whole health care. After graduating with a bachelor’s degree in biology from Saint Louis University, Dr. Abdelbaset enrolled in Logan’s DC program.
“The DC program was great,” Dr. Abdelbaset said. “It was filled with wonderful classmates and a lot of faculty members who were great mentors. I still see and keep in touch with them frequently.”
Dr. Abdelbaset completed the DC program in 2008 and, in addition to working at a private practice, returned to the classroom. This time teaching the classes, not taking them.
“I’ve been teaching at various institutions for about 10 years now,” Dr. Abdelbaset said. “I currently serve as the Associate Dean of Academic Affairs at Ponce Health Sciences University (PHSU) as well as Assistant Professor of Basic Sciences, but I’ve previously worked at a nursing school, a pharmacy school and I even returned to teach at Logan for a few years.”
With over a decade of teaching experience, Dr. Abdelbaset wanted to improve and formalize his academic skills and teaching methodology. After researching various programs, he discovered Logan’s Doctor of Education (Ed.D.) in Health Professions Education program. Noting the program’s emphasis on health education, Dr. Abdelbaset enrolled and found himself a student once again.
“As chiropractors, we gain the knowledge and the experience, but we aren’t always taught how to teach it to others,” Dr. Abdelbaset explained. “This program is teaching us how to teach.”
Logan’s Ed.D. program provides in-depth knowledge and practical skills to help health care professionals apply their expertise and clinical experience in the classroom, becoming expert educators in their fields.
Dr. Abdelbaset enjoys the program and is most interested in his cognitive psychology and instruction class.
“I learn something new in every class that I can apply in my current position at PHSU,” Dr. Abdelbaset said. “I look forward to being able to package up my experience and knowledge of the profession and work towards changing healthcare through education.”
